Guidance for the Usage of DSC in e-Governance

Introduction to E-Governance

Using the e-government platform, you can easily purchase various services and request them in various ways. The Government of India provides access to the platform to ensure that all citizens have ubiquitous access to G2C and G2B services.

Digital signature certificates: A key component for providing e-government services

Digitally signed certificates provide a realistic approach to improving public and private electronic services. This again highlights the often obvious alternative of using an online connection rather than accepting a physical wire.

Using the e-government platform, various services can be conveniently purchased and these e-signature services can be requested in various ways. The Government of India provides access to the platform to ensure that all ordinary citizens have regular access to G2C and G2B services.

A Digital Signature Certificate or “DSC” is an electronic computerized certificate format used to store a user’s personal information in a digital format. It guarantees the security, protection, and authenticity of users’ personal information, which cannot be decrypted by any member without using the public key.

The sender’s message is encrypted with the private key and can be decrypted with the public key by any intended participant or recipient. It protects data against cybercrime, cyber spam, or cyber hacking.

Main functions of DSC in e-governance

1) Legal non-repudiation: No one can reliably deny the authenticity of the data, providing legal support to the sender.

2) Authenticity: The user’s personal data will be safe, secure, and confidential. It is not allowed to manipulate or change the data.

3) Integrity: The encrypted format of the transmitted information ensures maximum probability and originality that no one changes the data.

Hence, DSC is used by many government services to accept any certificate online, submit complaints, and submit ITR, IRCTC, DGFT, SFMS, NSDG, eOffice, and eDistrict applications electronically.

DSC procurement process

A DSC can only be obtained through a CA, a certification authority registered under the MCA under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs and authorized to generate DSCs for individuals.

1) The digital signature certificate must be installed on the USB computer interface using an encrypted electronic token.

2) After the verification is completed, the applicant can use the electronic token to install the DSC in an encrypted format.

3) Applicants are required to pay an application fee after which their details will be verified.

4) To do this, the applicant needs to fill in the certificate details and then proceed with the application process.

5) DSC can be used in two wired modes: online mode and offline mode. Applicants can apply online through the online application or related software.

Notes:- DSC can be provided by a certification body licensed under the Government of India IT Act, 2000 as a certification body for CCA controllers.
